ValleyNet Announces Investigation of Irregular Financial Transactions

ValleyNet, a Vermont non-profit Internet Service provider (ISP), announced today that it has launched an investigation into certain financial irregularities and has notified law enforcement authorities. The irregularities were uncovered by a newly strengthened management team as part of a leadership-directed program to bring a higher level of professionalism and internal controls to the business. ValleyNet emphasized that this will not impact its customers or their service.
ValleyNet Restructures to Benefit its Employees and Customers

ValleyNet (VN), a Vermont non-profit Internet Service provider (ISP), announced that it is restructuring the means by which it provides its management and design, build, and operations services. The VN Board, after assessing the ISP market and VN’s small role within it, has decided to expand its partnership with GWI (Great Works Internet) of Biddeford, ME to embrace the employment and direct day to day management of VN’s current operational staff. GWI is organized as a B-Corp. (www.bcorporation.net/en-us/), and as such, is closely aligned with the non-profit operational ethic of VN and its customers. The board strongly believes that this arrangement will significantly benefit both VN’s employees and its customers.

Next week, voters at more than 35 Town Meetings across Vermont will decide whether to join new Communications Union Districts (“CUDs”). As the state’s first CUD, the East Central Vermont Telecommunications District (“ECFiber”) believes that an update on our status will encourage other groups of towns to adopt the CUD approach to rural broadband.

ValleyNet, ECFiber’s implementation partner, announced today that it has chosen a new Managing Director, Christopher Recchia, of Randolph, VT. Chris brings a wealth of non-profit and telecom regulatory experience, most notably as the head of Vermont’s Department of Public Service from 2012-2017. “ValleyNet and ECFiber have created a now-proven model for expanding quality high-speed broadband to rural New England and I look forward to expanding its availability to other areas, as well as bringing ECFiber’s network to its full potential,” Chris stated.

ValleyNet wishes to remind the Upper Valley that it is still alive and kicking (despite the recent announcement by FirstLight that it is discontinuing service to former ValleyNet email account holders.)
When ValleyNet divested its dial-up accounts and email addresses to SoverNet (now FirstLight) in 2006, it “pivoted” to bringing universally available broadband to the region (see ‘History.’) Since 2008, ValleyNet has been assisting the East Central Vermont Telecommunications District (“ECFiber”) in financing, building and operating its fiber-to-the-home network in 24 Vermont municipalities. ECFiber now has close to 700 miles of optical fiber network and will soon add its 3,000th customer!
